Tips and Tricks for a Successful Interior Painting Project

Painting your interior walls is one of the best and easiest ways to make you fall in love with your home again and freshen it up. Choosing the right colors can highlight the best parts of your home while minimizing its downsides. Unfortunately, this is a complicated project and a major time investment, so you need to prepare for it. Here are a few tips from the experts at Handyman Connection of Tuscaloosa:

  • Prepare the Surface – The most important part of painting a room is properly preparing the surface that you’re going to paint. A pockmarked or cracked surface will not look good once you paint it. You need to scrape, sand, patch and fill every hole, dent, crack, and surface imperfection before you start painting.
  • Mix a Little Bit of Paint with Your Primer – The primer keeps stains from bleeding through, improves paint adhesion, and allows for one-coat coverage. It can also eliminate blotchy looking finishes and texture differences. Tinting the primer by mixing a small amount of topcoat paint with the primer will greatly enhance the ability of the topcoat to hide the primed surface. We recommend doing this with a dedicated primer for the best paint adhesion.
  • Choose Canvas Drop Cloths – While plastic drop cloths are inexpensive, canvas is a better choice. Canvas drop cloths will last a lifetime and are rip-resistant and durable. They also absorb paint drips and since they lie flat, they are less of tripping hazard compared with plastic drop cloths. You can also fold them around corners and doorways.
  • Use a Telescoping Extension Pole A telescoping extension pole can make it much easier for you to paint your ceiling. Stepladders are more unwieldy. When shopping for extension poles, choose one with a soft, non-slip grip and a rigid metal core. It also needs to have a metal threaded end. Metal extension poles are easier to control than a plastic extension pole.

Follow these tips and you’ll be able to create a beautiful new look for your home. If you want to paint your interior, but you don’t have time to do so, then give us a call.
